Jason Momoa Is Set to Star in WB's Live-Action MINECRAFT Movie

Aquaman star Jason Momoa has landed his next big film project with WB’s live-action adaptation of the massively popular video game franchise Minecraft.

The movie is set to be directed by Jared Hess, best known for his film Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. Hess has been doing a lot of TV work since his 2016 movie Masterminds. He most recently directed a few episodes of Netflix’s documentary series Murder Among The Mormons.

Warner Bros. has been developing a Minecraft movie for years, and during that time directors Shawn Levy, Rob McElhenney ,and Peter Sollett were looking to direct. Steve Carell was also lined up to star in a movie at one point. There are no details on the story that Hess is looking to tell, but there are a lot of different directions that it could go. It will be interesting to see how this will look visually as well in live-action.

My kids used to play Minecraft all the time when they were younger. I’ve personally never played the game, but I did like how it sparked the imagination of my kids. I hope this movie actually turns out good! There’s definitely a lot of story potential to mine.

Mary Parent and Roy Lee will produce, and Jill Messick will receive a posthumous credit for working on the film prior to her death in 2018. Jon Berg, Cale Boyter and Jon Spaihts will executive produce. Mojang Studios, the Swedish video game developer behind Minecraft, will produce via Lydia Winters and Vu Bui.

Jason Momoa will next be seen in DC’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
