JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS is Getting a New Live-Action Series at Amazon From the Producers of FALLOUT and WESTWORLD

Fans of Jem and the Holograms have a reason to celebrate because the iconic 1980s animated franchise is heading back to live-action. An all-new series based on the beloved property is officially in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with some impressive creative talent helping bring it to life.

According to Deadline, Amazon has landed the project, which comes from Hasbro Entertainment and is being produced by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan's Kilter Films.

The studio has built a strong reputation with projects such as Westworld and Fallout, making this a very interesting team to tackle a modern reimagining of the colorful music-driven franchise.

The project reportedly began making the rounds in late 2025 through Hasbro Entertainment, and Amazon quickly became the frontrunner to secure it. Industry chatter linked Kilter Films to the series early on, but it took several months before everything was finalized and officially announced.

Joy, Nolan, and Athena Wickham will executive produce for Kilter Films, with Gabriel Marano serving as executive producer for Hasbro Entertainment.

This new adaptation arrives 41 years after Jem and the Holograms, created by Christy Marx, first debuted in 1985. The animated series was designed to ride the wave of MTV's explosive popularity and the rise of music videos.

The story centered on Jerrica Benton, a record company owner who transformed into her rock star alter ego, Jem, the lead singer of Jem and The Holograms.

Music was at the heart of the series and every episode featured original songs and music videos, helping separate it from other animated shows of the era. Its theme song, "Truly Outrageous," is recognizable to a generation of fans and remains closely associated with the franchise today.

What many people may not realize is just how successful the series was during its original run. Across three seasons, Jem and the Holograms became the most-watched syndicated cartoon on television, outperforming powerhouse franchises like Transformers and He-Man.

Even after the series wrapped in 1988, its popularity continued through the 1990s as reruns remained among the most-watched syndicated children's programs.

The franchise has maintained a loyal fanbase ever since. Comic books, music releases, and the long-running fan convention JemCon, which is now celebrating its twentieth year, have helped keep the property alive for decades.

Of course, this isn't the first attempt to bring Jem back. Universal and Blumhouse previously released a live-action Jem and the Holograms movie in 2015. Directed and produced by Jon M. Chu and starring Aubrey Peeples as Jem, the film failed to connect with audiences and never launched the franchise revival many hoped for.

This new series appears to have a different path ahead of it. Amazon has been building an impressive lineup of female-focused young adult and coming-of-age content on Prime Video. Recent successes include Off Campus, The Summer I Turned Pretty, We Were Liars, and the Culpables franchise. The addition of Jem and the Holograms feels like it fits right in with that growing slate.

Meanwhile, Hasbro Entertainment continues to aggressively expand its biggest brands across film and television. Upcoming projects include The Forgotten Realms, a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series at Netflix produced by Shawn Levy; a Baldur's Gate series at HBO with Craig Mazin writing and executive producing; and a live-action Power Rangers series currently in development at Disney+.

For now, there are no story details or casting announcements attached to Jem And The Holograms, but with Amazon, Hasbro, and Kilter Films all involved, this revival is already shaping up to be one of the more intriguing adaptations in development.

The biggest question now is whether this new version can capture the music, style, and larger-than-life energy that made the original series such a phenomenon in the first place.
