Jennifer Grey Set to Star in Untitled Dance Movie at Lionsgate; Could It Be a DIRTY DANCING Sequel?
Jennifer Grey has played some great roles in her past as Toni in Red Dawn, as scorned sister Jeanie in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and as Rachel Green’s ex-best friend Mindy in Friends, but nothing as iconic as the role of Baby Houseman in the classic 1987 film Dirty Dancing. She played the role of Baby so perfectly that this was the ultimate ‘80s movie that transcended through the years and is still so loved today.
In the film, Baby and her family hit a Catskills resort for the summer, where the introverted and political justice-minded teen falls in love with resident dancer, Johnny Castle, played by the late, great Patrick Swayze. This creates a fuss, as her father is concerned with the repercussions of her hanging with riff raff, but all is forgiven when Johnny comes back to the resort for one last dance, removes baby from the corner, and they have the time of their lives.
Rumors are flying around about the film, as Grey, who has been very selective of her projects since the ‘80s, is starring in and executive-producing a new film at Lionsgate, and all we know about it is that it’s a dance film that takes place in the 1990s. That would be approximately 30 years after the time period of the first film. If Grey is returning to the screen and making sequel to the beloved original, that would definitely do well with fans! The studio refuses to make any comment on the film, or whether or not it ties to the original, so we will just have to wait and see.
The only bummer about a sequel would be the fact that Swayze has since passed away, and so has Jerry Orbach, who played Grey’s father in the film. It may be cool to see Kelly Bishop (Gilmore Girls) back as Mrs. Houseman though! We’ll keep our fingers crossed and let you as know as soon as we do. Would you be excited for a Dirty Dancing sequel?
