Jennifer Lawrence Says "Absolutely F-ing Not" to Becoming Blue Painted X-MEN Character Mystique Again
Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games, Silver Linings Playbook) played the X-Men character Mystique four times on the big screen between 2011 and 2019, and despite the positive experience, she is certain she’s done with any role that involves such extensive makeup and prosthetics.
Lawrence said in a recent video interview with Allure magazine, “My favorite part of playing Mystique was the stunts. It was so fun to train in that way and learn how to move. I had the same stunt double, Renee Moneymaker, who was Katniss. She is one of my best friends, so that was great. My least favorite part was most certainly the paint.”
When Allure then asked if she would consider doing heavy prosthetic work like Mystique again, Lawrence quickly responded:
“Never say never, but absolutely fucking not. You know how air brushing is very cold? And I am ticklish. I learned how little sleep I can operate on and what can happen to the human mind when you’ve actually reached your breaking point. And patience!”
In a separate interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Lawrence recalled the difficulty of having to sit in a makeup chair for eight hours during the making of X-Men: First Class, which marked her debut as Mystique.
“For First Class, it was all body paint and glue. It was eight hours every time and ticklish. You’ve had air brushing, right? Imagine two tiny, cold, compressing air brushes all over your body. I am a hero. No one will understand what I went through.”
Lawrence added that even just for her Mystique screen test before she landed the role she had to dye her hair several different colors in one day, from red to brown, black and blonde. The dye ended up permanently damaging her hair.
It sounds rough, but she made it through, and gave a series of great performances. Lawrence recently returned to the role of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, out this month, and she’s wrapped production on Martin Scorsese’s thriller What Happens at Night, which will probably be released in 2027.
