Jeremy Allen White Talks About His Attempt to Create Rotta the Hutt's Voice in THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU
Jeremy Allen White is best known for playing leading roles in the dramas Shameless, The Iron Claw, and The Bear. This year, he has taken on two roles that required him to take his dramatic chops to another level and include some special voice work.
His Bruce Springsteen biopic, Deliver Me From Nowhere, was just released in theaters, and the Star Wars film The Mandalorian and Grogu is less than seven months away.
While the first of those films is based on a real man that White is meant to emulate, the second only has a sort-of blue print. The Star Wars character Rotta the Hutt is the son of Jabba the Hutt, who had a notoriously low, gravely, monstrous tone of voice, so finding the right voice for his son was probably daunting.
But as it turned out, prepping for the role didn’t actually need to be as thought out and White had originally thought.
In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, White said that he asked the film’s writer/director Jon Favreau if there was any vocal work he needed to do, and he said he did try some options for Rotta the Hutt’s voice, but was told his voice would likely be changed anyway.
He explained, “I was like, ‘What kind of vocal work do you want me to do?’ and I was doing some stuff, but [Jon Favreau] said ‘We’re gonna mess with it!’”
As much as that may have taken the air out of his sails challenge-wise, it probably also did help to take some of the pressure off. White went on to say that he hadn’t seen much of the film yet, so he’s unsure of exactly how his performance came out, but Favreau has done so well with The Mandalorian so far, I bet this movie will also be great.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to be released on May 22, 2026.
