Jeremy Renner Confirms That the Original Black Widow/Hawkeye Scene Did in Fact Include Thanos

A couple weeks ago, we reported that Jeremy Renner explained in an interview at Celebrity Fan Fest that the original scene between his Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow included a battle before the big climactic moment. Not the battle we saw between the two characters, but a battle between them and some foes that showed up in a ship in the ocean below the cliff at Vormir.

The editor for the film, Matthew Schmidt, actually expanded on that info and confirmed that the attack in the ship below was actually led by Thanos. He said in an interview:

“It was a tough scene for us to shoot. It's a reshoot we did about six months ago. The original was a lot more complicated, with an attack by Thanos. This was just us.”

Maybe it really ground Thanos’s gears that he gave up his daughter for the soul stone, and they were about to make his gesture moot by gaining the stone in their past to spoil his future successes. Or something. Interesting. But I’m glad they cut it. That scene was intensely emotional, and I think adding to it would have distracted from the whole story.

Would you have liked to have seen Hawkeye and Black Widow battle it out against Thanos? Or do you think the scene was perfect as is?
