Jeremy Renner Says His WAKE UP DEAD MAN Character Is Unaware of the Actor Jeremy Renner Despite His Franchise Name Drop
After it was announced that Marvel star Jeremy Renner was joining the cast of the third Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, some fans wondered if the actor’s name drop from the second film would be addressed.
The actor’s name was mentioned in Glass Onion, and now he is playing a character named Dr. Nat Sharp, who evidently has no idea of the actor Jeremy Renner’s existence.
In Glass Onion, the scene features Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), who eats a canapé served with hot sauce at the weekend getaway of Edward Norton's Miles Bron. The character said to the detective, "Oh, that's Jeremy Renner's small-batch hot sauce. I let him invest. He sends me, like, a pallet every year. Take a few bottles." The bottles feature Renner's face on them, so it’s even more funny that the actor has joined the next film.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Renner tried to clear up the situation, saying of his character:
"He has no idea who he is. He's a sad doctor. He isn't watching movies, man. He's a sad man. That's the archetype I play: dad in crisis." Renner went on to say that while he "wasn't part" of figuring out why Dr. Nat Sharp looks exactly like the dude who plays Hawkeye, he knows "it was talked about".
So if it was talked about, there may be a nod to the fact that this doctor looks an awful lot like Marvel’s Hawkeye.
Writer-director Rian Johnson told Tudum earlier this month:
"Jeremy's a great actor who I've wanted to work with for a long time. I was very relieved he thought the hot sauce thing was funny! He's playing a proper part in this one; we'll keep the sauce offscreen. Maybe we'll sneak a few bottles onto the catering table."
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery premieres in select theaters on November 26, before landing on Netflix on December 12.
