Searchlight Pictures has shared the first trailer for the upcoming biopic drama The Eyes of Tammy Faye. The film stars Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield as Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker, a former televangelist couple who were known for hosting The PTL Club during the early ‘70s up to the late 80s. The movie focuses on the couple’s rise and fall. It looks like quite an interesting story, and Chastain and Garfield look like they give great performances.

The film was directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick), and it also stars Cherry Jones (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Tammy’s mother Rachel, Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil) as Jerry Falwell, Sam Jaeger (Parenthood) as Roe Messner, Gabriel Olds (Surrogates) as Pat Robertson, Mark Wystrach (Johnny Christ) as Gary Paxton, Chandler Head as Young Tammy Faye, and Fredric Lehne as Fred Grover.

The film offers “an intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker.” In the 1970s and 80s, “Tammy Faye and her husband, Jim Bakker, rose from humble beginnings to create the world’s largest religious broadcasting network and theme park, and were revered for their message of love, acceptance and prosperity. Tammy Faye was legendary for her indelible eyelashes, her idiosyncratic singing, and her eagerness to embrace people from all walks of life. However, it wasn’t long before financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal toppled their carefully constructed empire.”

The film is scheduled to make its debut in theaters on Friday, September 17th.
