Jim Henson Company Brings MAGIC THE GATHERING to Life With a Whimsical Lorwyn Short Film

As Magic: The Gathering gears up for another year packed with “Universes Beyond” crossovers, Wizards of the Coast is kicking off 2026 by turning its focus inward. The game is returning to one of its most beloved settings with Lorwyn Eclipsed, an original expansion that revisits the strange, dual-natured plane of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor for the first time since 2008.

To mark the occasion, the team has teamed up with the Jim Henson Company for something really cool, a lovingly crafted short film that celebrates Magic’s own worldbuilding.

Ahead of the set’s release later this month, Wizards of the Coast revealed a collaboration with the Henson Company to promote Lorwyn Eclipsed through a short titled “The Ballad of Squen and Cragg.”

The film is a puppet-driven rock ballad that follows two Boggarts questioning what life might be like beyond the auroras that link, and divide, the bright world of Lorwyn and the shadow-soaked realm of Shadowmoor.

The Henson Company’s history with dark fairy tale fantasy, seen in projects like The Dark Crystal, meshes naturally with Magic’s off-kilter take on classic fantasy tropes. The result is playful, a little strange, and just cheesy enough for fans to enjoy.

As Squen and Cragg sing their hearts out, the song becomes an oddly emotional meditation on identity and duality, themes that have always defined the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor setting.

The Henson Company would’ve been an easy fit for the kind of collaborations Magic fans have grown used to. A Secret Lair packed with puppet-themed cards or a direct crossover with The Dark Crystal would’ve made sense. It also would’ve sparked the usual debates that follow many Magic collaborations. Instead, this short exists outside the game and puts the spotlight squarely on Magic’s original lore.

This collaboration amplifies Magic’s own storytelling. It’s a handcrafted celebration of a classic plane, made with care and genuine affection for the source material. In a year when Magic’s high-profile crossovers are set to dominate the release calendar, this project is a refreshing reminder that Wizards of the Coast still believes in championing its own worlds.

Lorwyn Eclipsed hits store shelves on January 23.
