Jim Henson’s LABYRINTH Returns to Theaters For its 40th Anniversary Celebration
It’s time to journey back through the maze. The Jim Henson Company and Fathom Entertainment have officially announced the Labyrinth 40th anniversary rerelease, giving fans a chance to experience the 1986 fantasy classic on the big screen once again.
The remastered version of Labyrinth will hit theaters for a limited engagement from January 8–11, 2026, with tickets already available through the Fathom Entertainment website.
Along with the film, audiences will also get a special featurette celebrating the movie’s passionate fan community, who have kept the magic alive for nearly four decades.
For those who might need a refresher, Labyrinth follows Sarah, played by Jennifer Connelly, a teenager whose imagination gets her in deep trouble after she wishes her baby brother would be taken away by goblins. The official synopsis reads:
“Frustrated with babysitting on yet another weekend night, Sarah (Connelly), a teenager with an active imagination, summons the Goblins to take her baby stepbrother away.
“When little Toby actually disappears, Sarah must follow him into a fantastical world to rescue him from the Goblin King (Bowie). Guarding his castle is the labyrinth itself, a twisted maze of deception, populated with outrageous characters and unknown dangers.
“To get through it in time to save Toby, Sarah befriends the Goblins, in hopes that their loyalty isn’t just another illusion in a place where nothing is as it seems.”
Directed by Jim Henson and produced by George Lucas, Labyrinth brought together a powerhouse team of creative legends. David Bowie’s unforgettable performance as the Goblin King Jareth, combined with his original songs and Trevor Jones’ incredible score, made the movie an instant cult favorite.
The awesome creature designs came from Brian Froud, while Henson’s Creature Shop gave life to the film’s many whimsical, and sometimes eerie, characters, performed by talents like David Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Karen Prell, Ron Mueck, Kevin Clash, Shari Weiser, Anthony Asbury, Brian Henson, and Frank Oz.
Over the years, Labyrinth has become more than just a movie, it’s a cornerstone of ‘80s fantasy filmmaking and the magic of Henson’s vision still resonates.
Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Entertainment, shared his excitement about bringing the film back to theaters, saying:
“The magical combination of Jim Henson, George Lucas, David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly, and hundreds of extraordinary creatures and puppets from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop made Labyrinth a landmark fantasy classic, one that is beloved by Fathom Entertainment audiences over the years.
“We are honored to bring this 1986 epic back to theatres from Sony Pictures for its 40th anniversary in this special presentation and provide a brilliant night at the movies for audiences of all ages.”
Whether you’ve watched it dozens of times or you’re stepping into the Goblin King’s realm for the first time, this anniversary rerelease is the perfect opportunity to get lost in Labyrinth all over again.
