Jim Rash and Nat Faxon to Direct New Slasher Film DEAD MALL
You'll probably recognize Jim Rash (Community) and Nat Faxon (Married) as actors first, but they're also the writer/directors of the beloved 2013 Sundance coming-of-age comedy The Way Way Back and they won an Oscar for co-writing 2011's The Descendants with Alexander Payne. It's been three years since their last movie, and now they've finally set a follow-up project.
Deadline reports that the duo will write and direct Dead Mall, a slasher film set in an abandoned mall and centering on a bunch of 40-somethings who should (but maybe don't) have enough knowledge to not make the same idiotic mistakes horror movie characters often make in situations like that. Sounds like a bit of a meta riff on the slasher concept, maybe somewhat akin to last year's terrific slasher The Final Girls. No word yet on whether or not Rash and Faxon will be two of the ensemble characters, but I wouldn't be surprised, since they both had roles in The Way Way Back.
20th Century Fox has acquired the pitch, so the pair will now get to work writing the screenplay. I really like these guys (seek out The Way Way Back if you haven't — Sam Rockwell is amazing in it), so I'll try to keep you up to date on this new project as soon as I hear anything else about it.
