J.J. Abrams Explains the Reason for Kylo Ren's Repaired Helmet in STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER
As we’ve already seen from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker marketing, Kylo Ren has repaired the helmet that he smashed during one of his temper tantrums in The Last Jedi. The helmet certainly has a cool look with the dark red repairs, but why did he have to repair that specific helmet? Whey couldn’t he just get a new one?
Well, director J.J. Abrams explained why during an interview with Empire (via Reddit):
"Having him be masked, but also fractured, is a very intentional thing. Like that classic Japanese process of taking ceramics and repairing them, and how the breaks in a way define the beauty of the piece as much as the original itself. As fracted as Ren is, the mask becomes a visual representation of that. There's something about this that tells his history. His mask doesn't ultimately hide him and his behavior is revealed."
I actually really like that reasoning behind Kylo’s helmet. The question is, will he smash it all over again before the movie ends? As you know, Kylo has a hard time controlling his temper and anger, and he lashes out. He’s so out of control that he killed his own dad!
A lot of fans are wondering if Kylo will find some kind of redemption in this next film, but I don’t know, I don’t think it’s possible. After killing Han Solo, I’d kinda be pissed if he’s redeemed. But we’ll just have to wait and see how the story plays out.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker lands in theaters on December 20th.
