J.J. Abrams Explains The Title of STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

When it was announced that the title of Episode IX would be Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, fans have been wondering what it means. After all, there has to be a meaning behind it! The name Skywalker carries a ton of weight in the Star Wars franchise, but what Skywalker is the title referring to!?

Director JJ Abrams recently did an interview with Entertainment Tonight while at Star Wars Celebration over the weekend and in it he talks about the title and explains that it is “the right title for this movie.” When asked directly, “who is the Skywalker [in the title], is Rey the Skywalker, what is going on?” Abrams said:

“Well, the title feels like it’s the right title for this movie. I know it’s provocative and asks a bunch of questions but when you see the movie you’ll see how it was intended and what it means. But in the flow of titles this title had a very  big responsibility, it had to be the end of not only three movies, but nine movies. The idea of incorporating the movies that come before strangely is the story of the movie. It’s the characters in the film inheriting everything that’s come before in previous generations, wether it’s the sins of the father or the wisdom that they’ve acquired, and the question is, is this new generation up to the task, can they stand up to what they have to. So in a way, we came to this movie having inherited a lot, and the question can we do it is a question we ask ourselves everyday.”

Abrams has always been great at answering questions like this that aren’t really answers to the question being asked.

Abrams was also asked again if he would be changing Rey’s parentage from what was established in The Last Jedi and all Abrams said was that he can’t wait for people to see the movie to find out what happens. Great deflection! But, I always thought that Kylo Ren was lying about Rey’s parents in the first place, so I assume her parentage is going to play a very big part in this final chapter in the Saga.

I’m confident that Abrams will wrap up the Star Wars saga nicely and deliver a conclusion that will satisfy most fans and answer many of those burning questions that we have.

The Rise of Skywalker will be released on December 20th!
