J.J. Abrams Had a Much Different Plan For Rey's Parentage and it Was "Kind of Undone" with THE LAST JEDI

A lot of fans weren't happy with the way that director Rian Johnson handled Rey's parentage in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. If you need a reminder, Kylo Ren basically drives it into her head that her parents were nobodies that just ditched her on a planet because they didn't care about her.

According to Simon Pegg, J.J Abrams had a very different idea of where he wanted to take this aspect of the story and says that now it has been "kind of undone" by what Johnson decided to do. Here's the full quote from Pegg:

To be fair, Johnson has said that he wasn’t told anything regarding that part of the story and was given free reign to do what he wanted:

“I wasn’t given any directive as to what that had to be. I was never given the information that she is this or she is that."

So if Lucasfilm wanted to stay the course for what Abrams had initially planned, they could have. But it really does seem like it could be an easy fix, as I believe Kylo Ren was lying to her to get her to join him in the first place.

I have a feeling that Rey's parentage is all a part of the mystery box that Abrams has built and that regardless of what Rian did in The Last Jedi, Rey's parentage will be revealed in Episode IX. So fans are still just left to wonder and speculate where in the hell Rey came from.
