J.J. Abrams Is Developing a Live-Action SPEED RACER Series for Apple TV+

J.J. Abrams is executive producing a live-action series adaptation of the classic animated series Speed Racer for Apple TV+! I’ve been a fan of Speed Racer since I was a kid, and I even loved the hell out of the movie that The Wachowskis made back in 2008. I know the movie gets a lot of crap from people, but I thought it was an absolute blast!

Speed Racer follows the “adventure of auto racer Speed Racer and his souped up car, the Mach 5. His team consists of his father and car builder Pops Racer, his little brother Spritle and his pet chimpanzee Chim-Chim, and Speed’s girlfriend Trixie. Speed also frequently crosses paths with the mysterious Racer X, who is secretly Speed’s older brother Rex Racer.”

Apparently, the project has been in the works for a considerable amount of time, and they’ve finally given it a series order. Ron Fitzgerald (Westworld, Perry Mason) and Hiram Martinez (Get Shorty, Snowpiercer) are set to write and executive produce. They will also serve as co-showrunners.

I really hope that this series dares to get as wild and crazy as the ‘60s cartoon series was. I hope it captures that same tone and spirit. It’ll be interesting to see how this Speed Racer series turns out!
