J.J. Abrams Is Producing THE SHINING-Inspired Series OVERLOOK and a JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Series for HBO Max
I’ve got some exciting news to share for fans of Stephen King’s The Shining and DC fans! J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company are developing a series titled Overlook, which is inspired by The Shining, a Justice League Dark series, and an original show conceived by Abrams titled Duster. All these shows will be coming to the HBO Max streaming service.
Overlook will feature iconic characters from The Shining, and it “explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction.” Like the Hulu series Castle Rock, “Overlook is named after an iconic location from King’s horror universe. In another parallel.”
Castle Rock co-creator/executive producer Dustin Thomason and co-executive producer Scott Brown are in negotiations to write Overlook. I love Castle Rock, so it great to see the creative team from that reuniting for this Overlook series. I’m excited to learn more about it and see what stories from the Overlook Hotel that they end up telling. There are a lot of great ones!
Justice League Dark is a branch of the Justice League dedicated to dealing with mystical and supernatural threats. It features characters who are mostly involved with the occult, and are offbeat and creature-like. This includes characters such as John Constantine, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, Swamp Thing, the Changing Man, and Zatanna. Other characters include a centuries-old vampire named Andrew Bennett, the shapeshifter Black Orchid, a spy who worked for villain Felix Faust named Doctor Mist, Frankenstein, Pandora, Nightmare Nurse, and more.
There have been attempts to get Justice League Dark off the ground in some way for years. It’s good to see that WB and DC finally figured out what they want and are moving forward with it.
As for Duster, Abrams created the series with LaToya Morgan (The Walking Dead), and they are co-writing it. The story is set in the 1970’s Southwest and “revolves around the life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate that goes from awful to wildly, stupidly, dangerously awful.” That’s all we know about it so far, but it sounds like it a cool concept that could be a lot of fun to watch!
Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer, HBO Max and President, TNT, TBS, and truTV said in a statement:
“What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie. What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic I.P. from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max.”
I can’t wait to see how these shows turn out, but I’m mostly excited about Overlook. What do you think about these three shows that Abrams and his team are looking to develop?
