J.J. Abrams Opens Up About How He Was More Daring While Making STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

Writer and director J.J. Abrams brought us our first Star Wars film in this final trilogy with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and is now finishing up the entire saga with the final film, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. In a recent interview with Total Film, Abrams opened up about his experiences in making the two films, and how things are so different this time around. He said:

“On this one, I let myself be, at least in the way I was approaching the thing, freer. In Episode 7, I was adhering to a kind of approach that felt right for Star Wars in my head. It was about finding a visual language, like shooting on locations and doing practical things as much as possible. And we continue that in Episode 9, but I also found myself doing things that I’m not sure I would have been as daring to do on Episode 7.”

Abrams’ first attempt at a Star Wars film was fun and exciting for many, but was not without its critics. And Abrams is the first to say he made some mistakes, but he credits Rian Johnson, writer and director of Episode VIII, The Last Jedi, with helping him refocus and take back the vision he has for the film. He added:

“Rian helped remind me that that’s why we’re on these movies – not to just do something that you’ve seen before. I won’t say that I felt constrained or limited on 7, but I found myself wanting to do something that felt more consistent with the original trilogy than not. And on 9, I found myself feeling like I’m just gonna go for it a bit more.”

It sounds like Abrams is pulling out all the stops for this final film, and I believe he is going to deliver an incredible movie to close out the Skywalker saga. T

he whole article will be available in Total Film Magazine when it hits shelves on November 15th. And Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theatres on December 20th. Do you have your tickets yet?
