J.J. Abrams Producing an Animated Film Adaptation of EMILY THE STRANGE
Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Bad Robot are developing an animated feature film adaptation of Emily the Strange, the beloved character from artist Rob Reger and his company Cosmic Debris.
J.J. Abrams will produce the film with Pamela Ribon (Moana, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Nimona) set to write the script.
Warner Bros released a video graphic below making the announcement.
Emily the Strange follows the story of a mysterious, quirky 13-year-old girl with a unique style and an unusual worldview. She’s known for her dark clothing, jet-black hair, and signature scowl.
Emily is an outsider who embraces her individuality and weirdness, seeing the world through a lens that’s both dark and whimsical. Alongside her four black cats—Mystery, Miles, Sabbath, and Neechee—she embarks on adventures that often blur the lines between the real and the surreal.
Emily lives in a world filled with strange inventions, bizarre mysteries, and dark humor. She a very fun character with a certain intelligence, curiosity, deadpan humor, and unapologetic self-expression that fans love.
The world of Emily the Strange includes horror, punk, and gothic aesthetics, and the character finds herself navigating friendships, odd encounters, and strange predicaments.
Emily was first introduced in the 1990s as a image on skateboards, stickers, and t-shirts, before seeing her brand expand into a multimillion-dollar universe of characters, books, comics, games, clothing and merchandise.
Creator Rob Reger shared in a statement that “both the creative and executive teams we have in place for the movie are incredible. Everyone shows up with a keen perspective along with an understanding and respect for the unique connection Emily the Strange has with our ‘real world.'
“Emily celebrates all that is weird and different, which in turn makes the strange and unusual in all of us, feel a little less alone. Bringing to life Emily’s universe and many mythologies we have created over the years is truly one of Emily’s best nightmares come true.”
Bill Damaschke, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation said: “Emily is an enduring pop-culture icon of individuality and empowerment, and Pamela Ribon has a singular and iconic voice.
“What an honor it is for us as Warner Bros. Pictures Animation to partner with Bad Robot, Rob [Reger] and Trevor [Duke-Moretz] in bringing Emily the Strange to the big screen.”
John Agbaje, SVP of Animation, Bad Robot, added: “At Bad Robot, we are looking to push the boundaries of what’s possible in animation. Emily, a character who refuses to be defined by others, is the perfect opportunity to do just that.
“We’re thrilled to add her world to our feature animation slate. The team assembled has so much passion for Emily the Strange, what she’s represented so far, and what she will mean to future generations.”
This should make for a fun flick!
