J.J. Abrams Says He'd "Be Honored" To Direct HBO's GAME OF THRONES Prequel Series

Turns out J.J. Abrams is a huge fan of Game of Thrones. The original series is about to come to an end with the upcoming series finale, but it will be followed by a prequel series being developed by writer Jane Goldman and producer George R.R. Martin.

This prequel project is something that Abrams would be honored to be asked to be a part of. During an interview with MTV International, the filmmaker was asked if he would be open to direct some episodes and this was his response:

“I'd be honored. . . . I am in awe of what they do, they make movies every episode. I feel like the truth is, I probably wouldn't want to get involved and de-mystify the thing. I just like watching it from the outside in. I've been lucky enough to work with some people. Nina Gold, who casts the show, who I've worked with a couple times now, and Gwendoline Christie, who was in Force Awakens. Anytime I hear anything about behind the scenes on that show, I feel like I want them to stop talking about it because I just love what they create.”

Abrams has never really been involved with a fantasy film project like Game of Thrones before. It would be new territory for him, and it would be interesting to see him take it on. But, even though he would be honored to be asked to direct, it sounds like he might turn down the opportunity because he’s such a big fan of the show.

I do like that someone who is at the top of his career in the Hollywood game admires and enjoys the work of what others do in the business. With Abrams being such a big fan maybe someone at HBO should reach out to him and at least make the offer!

Would you like to see J.J. Abrams direct any Game of Thrones prequel episodes?

The prequel series stars Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse and the story is set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, “the project chronicles the world's descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.” The network teased the plot with the following logline:

"Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it's not the story we think we know."

I know we’ve got a long way to go before we see this series, but it’s exciting to know that we are getting a new story set in the Westeros.
