J.J. Abrams Teases Tom Cruise’s DIGGER Performance Is “About to Blow Our Collective Mind”
Tom Cruise has spent decades proving he can do just about anything on screen, but if filmmaker J.J. Abrams is to be believed, audiences haven’t seen anything yet.
Following a viral social media post from Cruise that looked back on his incredible career while also offering a brief tease of his upcoming film Digger, Abrams jumped online to share his excitement for what’s coming next. And based on his reaction, Cruise’s latest role could be something very different from what fans are expecting.
Abrams, who first teamed up with Cruise on Mission: Impossible III and has remained a longtime admirer of the actor’s work, revealed that he’s already seen a small glimpse of Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s highly anticipated film.
He wrote: “My dear friend is no doubt about to blow our collective mind with Digger. What an undeniably spectacular career. What a bold and wild next step. Only seen a taste of the film… cannot wait for October to see the rest!”
In Digger, Cruise takes on a role unlike any we’ve seen him play before. The actor stars as a powerful oil baron whose company may have triggered an environmental catastrophe with consequences so severe they could potentially lead to nuclear war. Cruise sports a thick Southern accent, a beer belly, and thinning white hair.
John Goodman plays the President of the United States, while Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons round out the ensemble in the Warner Bros. production.
Cruise’s retrospective post has already become a major talking point online, racking up more than 10 million views and drawing reactions from across the entertainment industry. Among those chiming in was Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick co-star Glen Powell, who called him the “best of the best.”
The retrospective itself served as a reminder of just how remarkable Cruise’s filmography has been. The video highlighted iconic performances from films including Top Gun, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, and Jerry Maguire.
Alongside the video, Cruise shared a message with fans: “For the last 46 years, it has been my privilege to work alongside countless talented artists and crews to create these characters, stories, and films for you all. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the movies!”
As for Digger, anticipation is continuing to build. The film’s first trailer is expected to arrive on July 13, giving audiences their first real look at Cruise’s transformation and Iñárritu’s latest cinematic project. The movie is currently set to hit theaters on October 2.
