Joe Manganiello Talks About His Crocodile Character in ONE PIECE and Explains Why He's an Interesting Villain
Last week it was announced that Joe Manganiello will be taking on the role of of Mr. 0, also known as the "Desert King" Sir Crocodile, in Netflix’s live-actionOne Piece series.
Manganiello recently talked about the character and started off by revealing the research he did saying he has “tables and shelves full of all these different versions of Crocodile to look at” while he’s “going through the material.”
The actor goes on to say that he is looking to make Crocodile feel “real,” which entails understanding the “different intentions” and “different path” he has compared to some of the other characters.
Manganiello then shared what he thinks makes the character so interesting villain, saying: “But what I found, he is the flip side of the coin from Luffy, potentially.
“He represents this dark potential future for Luffy if he’s affected or allows the trauma of defeat to infect him the way it was for me.
“And I think that there’s a part of Crocodile that wants everyone to suffer the way that he did after Whitebeard, or with the disappointment of not becoming the King of the Pirates and letting that go. And of course, not trusting your friends.”
Manganiello’s Mr. 0 is going to play a key role in the coming season and beyond. He is a former Warlord of the Sea and the main antagonist of the Alabasta Arc in One Piece. He is the leader of the secret criminal organization Baroque Works and operates under the alias "Mr. 0."
His goal is to take over the desert kingdom of Alabasta by instigating civil war and seizing control of its ancient weapon, Pluton."
Crocodile possesses the powers of the Suna Suna no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to manipulate and transform into sand. Crocodile is ruthless and known for his cold, strategic mind and lack of compassion, seeking power at all costs.
In the series, “Monkey D. Luffy is a young adventurer who has longed for a life of freedom since he can remember. Luffy sets off from his small village on a perilous journey to find the legendary fabled treasure, One Piece, to become King of the Pirates!
“But in order to find the ultimate prize, Luffy will need to assemble the crew he’s always wanted before finding a ship to sail, searching every inch of the vast seas, outpacing the Marines, and outwitting dangerous rivals at every turn.”
