Joe Russo Set To Write Script For Chris Hemsworth's EXTRACTION 2
Chris Hemsworth’s new action film Extraction is blowing up on Netflix and it has become the streaming service’s most-watched feature film ever. The film was written by Joe Russo, who also produced it alongside Anthony Russo. Both are best known for their work on the Marvel films.
Russo has closed a deal with Netflix to write the sequel for Extraction, which may of may not see the return of Chris Hemsworth in the lead role of Tyler Rake. Russo revealed the news in an interview with Deadline, saying:
“The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be. We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”
The story for the first film follows “a fearless black market mercenary with nothing left to lose when his skills are solicited to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. But in the murky underworld of weapons dealers and drug traffickers, an already deadly mission approaches the impossible, forever altering the lives of Rake and the boy.”
The ending of the film left it wide open for the main character Rake to return if that’s the way the story turns out. There are also several other characters who had past stories, so there is a possibility for the next film to be a prequel.
Director Sam Hargrave is expected to return as the director. The deal with him will be solidified once the script is complete. Russo went on to talk about the director, saying:
“There was always a simple drive to the story, a balletic execution of action where you take a damaged character who made an egregious mistake in the past and has a shot at redemption which might be fatal. What was key is that we needed a muscular action director like Sam to be the main creative force in the execution of the action.”
When it comes to Hemsworth, There’s no deal in place for him to return yet. Russo said, “the focus will be to work out the story and then write the script and show it to him before that happens.” With how successful the first film was, I imagine it won’t be a hard sell to get Hemsworth back.
When talking about the shifting market with movie and how audiences are viewing them, Russo said:
“It is clearly a shifting market and we have had a great experience with SVOD. Everyone is going to have to take a moment see what the world is going to hold for the next few years, and make decisions based on what are the best ways to get audiences to see stories. [On Cherry] we’ll just base our decision on that. It doesn’t mean we’ve made a decision.”
When talking about the upcoming film Cherry, which stars Tom Holland, Anthony Russo said:
“Our plan for that movie was always to finish it and then show it and figure out the best course of action. We’re still a couple months away from that and we’ll evaluate what to do with Cherry in July.”
Joe Russo added:
“The focus of AGBO was always storytelling that is agnostic in its approach to distribution. We’ve felt for a long time there was going to be a change in distribution and that the more flexible and organic AGBO could behave, the more opportunity would present itself for storytelling. The theory we have been operating under has been effective for us.”
Have you watched Extraction yet? If so, what did you think? Are you excited to hear that a sequel is being made?
