Joel McHale Talks About Dislocating Chevy Chase's Shoulder in a Physical Altercation on the Set of COMMUNITY
The fan-favorite TV series Community is finally getting its follow-up film that we’ve been waiting for. The old cast is returning to reprise their roles… that is, everyone except Chevy Chase, who played the character Pierce Hawthorne in the show. Chase, who is best known for his Nation Lampoon’s Vacation movies, as well as classic comedies like Caddyshack and Three Amigos!, has a reputation for being difficult to work with, and has been very vocal about hating making the show Community, at one point calling the cast unfunny hacks. His co-stars aren’t exactly sad to see him go either.
In a recent episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, star of Community, Joel McHale described a section of his 2016 memoir, Thanks for the Money, which included a “step by step on how to fight Chevy Chase.” When Rosenbaum asked if their on-set altercations were verbal or physical, McHale confirmed there were multiple physical incidents. First, McHale joked, “It was an advanced horseplay. You know, horseplay, and then it always turned into sex.”
From there, he described the reality of the situation, saying, “It would get a little contentious. It would get to this point … I got in trouble one time because I injured him. I dislocated his shoulder.”
The series ran for six seasons, from 2009 to 2014. Chase was a series lead for the first four seasons, stepped back to a guest role in Season 5 and then didn’t return for the final season. It sounds like it was for the better, and no one will really miss him in the movie. I hate when the actors I enjoy watching on movies and shows turn out to not be nice people in real life.
