Joey's Top 15 Favorite Movies of 2019

2019 is about to come to a close. It’s been a fantastic year of movies! There are so many films that I saw and enjoyed this year, and I have now compiled a list of fifteen of my favorite films from this past year. This wasn’t an easy list to put together. There were a lot of films that I loved and enjoyed that ended up not making it, but I saw every film that I wanted to see this year and below you’ll see which ones I loved the most.

Now, this list is based on my taste, my opinion, and my experiences with these films. I’m well aware that you all have different tastes in films as well and you may not like some of the movies on my list. But… it’s my list and my opinion. If you do feel the need to tell me I’m wrong, go ahead, I won’t be offended.

I know that you’ve all got your own list of favorite films of the year and I’d love for you to share them! I’ve always enjoyed reading over the lists of our readers! So you can check out my list below and then leave your list in the comment section.

Jojo Rabbit

This was by far my favorite movie of the year. It told a great story with a powerful message. While the film dealt with heavy subject matter and was extremely emotional, it was also very funny, charming, and sweet. I also thought that the young actor who played Jojo, Roman Griggin Davis, gave one of the best performances of the year and he deserves recognition for his incredible talent.

Parasite

This movie was such a pleasant surprise. I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I saw this movie, but it told an incredibly unique and original story that was filled with surprising twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. This movie was completely unpredictable. My favorite aspect of it was how it started out one way and ended up being something completely different.

1917

It’s not often that Hollywood makes films about World War I these days, but director Sam Mendes has made one of the best historical war films ever. The whole film was shot in a way to make it look like one continuous shot and they brilliantly pulled it off. The film told a fantastic and thrilling story, the acting was top-notch, and it had a wonderful message of courage.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

This is easily one of the best films that Quentin Tarantino has made. I loved the setting of the film and the characters that he created for it. This was very much a character-driven story and Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt both delivered amazing performances.

Ready Or Not

I was not expecting this little horror thriller to be as good as it was, but it was easily the most fun I had while watching a movie this year. I loved the unexpected direction that the story went and the star of the movie gave a hell of a great performance.

The Peanut Butter Falcon

This was such a sweet movie that tells a wonderfully charming story. This is a must-see movie for everyone, and in it, you will get to witness one of the best performances of Shia LaBeouf’s career. This is one of those films that just completely flooded me with joy and happiness. This is a low budget movie, but is one I hope people make a point of seeing. It’s an inspiring story that has the power to move audiences.

Ford v Ferrari

I’m not really even into cars but this movie spoke to me. I loved the inspiring story that it told of a couple of friends working together to defy the odds and accomplish the seemingly impossible, while everything was working against them! This film reinvigorated me to keep fighting and succeed in accomplishing my goals and dreams.

John Wick: Chapter 3

The most badass action-packed movie of the year! The John Wick franchise has been an absolute blast to watch and this was yet another awesome sequel that took things to a whole new level. I don’t want to see this franchise end anytime soon! It’s just so much fun!

Joker

It’s still hilarious to me that the studio didn’t think this movie would be a success. This movie blew away all expectations and featured Joaquin Phoenix delivering one of the best performances of the year. I loved that the story challenged people and made audiences think. I never thought I’d see a movie based on a comic book character like this before and I think it’s going to open the doors for future comic book films and the way they can be made.

Uncut Gems

This movie was one hell of a wild and uncomfortable ride! I both hated it and I love it because of how it messed with my head and played with my emotions. It’s a seriously rough movie to watch, but in a good way. It’s certainly a unique movie-going experience because you’re so freakin’ stressed out throughout the movie! Adam Sandler also gives a hell of a performance and once again proves he’s got mad acting skills when he wants to use them.

Avengers: Endgame

Marvel Studios pulled off something absolutely incredible with  Avengers: Endgame and they closed out the Infinity Saga in an awesomely epic way that filled most fans, like myself, with joy, happiness, and complete satisfaction.

Downton Abbey

This ended up being a wonderfully made film that told a fantastically flawless story. I was a fan of the series and I ended up just so pleased with how this film turned out. The writing, direction, and acting was top-notch work.

Yesterday

I had zero expectations going in to watch this movie, but I was so entertained and moved by the strange and unique story that I had to share it with everyone I knew. I saw this film in theaters numerous times making sure that people I know saw it, and it never got old. On top of that, everyone I know who saw the film loved it.

Fighting with My Family

I don’t watch a lot of wrestling, but this story was overflowing with spirit and heart. I’m a big fan of films that have the power to inspire people to live and accomplish their dreams and overcome their trials to obtain what they want most.

Doctor Sleep

While this movie didn’t do very well at the box office, it was a great movie! I was so happy with how it turned out and how director Mike Flanagan pulled off making a film using elements from Stephen King’s book and Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. I also enjoyed the wonderful performances in the film.
