CHERNOBYL Director Johan Renck Set to Helm Netflix’s Live-Action ASSASSIN'S CREED Series

Netflix’s long-anticipated live-action adaptation of Assassin’s Creed just locked in a director, and it’s a pretty solid choice. Johan Renck, the Swedish filmmaker who earned an Emmy for his work on HBO’s Chernobyl, is set to helm the upcoming series for Netflix, according to Variety.

The series is set to star Toby Wallace from Euphoria and Lola Petticrew from Say Nothing , with Zachary Hart of Slow Horses and Laura Marcus from Death by Lightning joining as regulars.

Assassin’s Creed is based on the massively popular video game franchise from Ubisoft, and the series marks the first project to emerge from Netflix and Ubisoft’s partnership announced back in 2020. The show was officially revealed earlier this year.

Specific story details are still being kept quiet, but Netflix has shared a clear sense of the show’s scope. The official logline reads: “The series will be ‘centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions — one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will.

“The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.’” It’s classic Assassin’s Creed, leaning into conspiracies, power struggles, and history-bending conflict.

The series was created byRoberto Patino and David Wiener who are pulling double duty as showrunners and executive producers. They’re joined by Ubisoft Film & Television’s Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, and Genevieve Jones, along with Matt O’Toole as an executive producer.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise dates back to 2007, when the first game introduced players to the centuries-long conflict between the Assassins and the Templars. The series quickly became a global hit, spawning 13 additional mainline entries.

The most recent release, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, arrived in 2025. Altogether, the franchise has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide. A feature film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender hit theaters in 2016.

Renck’s resume makes him an intriguing fit for this material. Along with Chernobyl, his television work includes The Last Panther and episodes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Vikings, Bates Motel, and Halt and Catch Fire. He’s also directed the first two episodes of Bloodline and the recent sci-fi film Spaceman, starring Adam Sandler.

As a longtime fan of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, I really hope this series ends up being great!
