John Boyega Greatly Weakens the Idea of Finn Being a Jedi

Ever since Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out in 2015, I have loved the idea of Finn being a Force Sensitive who would be trained to be a Jedi. He could take the role of Jedi Guardian while Rey took the role of Jedi Consular or Sentinel. This to me was more interesting to explore than Rey’s parents or even where Luke was. Unfortunately, John Boyega may have put the kibosh on this theory. In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Boyega had this to say:

Would I like to be a Jedi? I think it would be more interesting if they had more than one person be a Jedi – but I think that that is the one of the unspoken laws of Star Wars. They only have one who has to go away and train[.]

We know that the one person who’ll train as a Jedi is going to be Rey, so dismissing the multiple Jedi theory does rather put a lid on that idea. That’s not to say Finn can’t rise to be an equally interesting kind of hero in Last Jedi.

I hope it takes an interesting turn; not in terms of being a Jedi, but there are loads more stronger characters in the Star Wars universe that can go up against Jedi and they don’t necessarily have to be a Jedi[.]

I would like to explore that more; the whole Boba Fett vibe. I would like to explore that for Finn, but who knows?

While he doesn’t outright say that Finn is not a Jedi, Boyega does heavily imply that is not the role for his character. While I’m disappointed, I’m glad to see in the trailers as well as in this interview that Finn seems to be stepping up. Do you think he could be as cool as Boba Fett? Do you still want to see him as a Jedi? I’m sure whatever choice is made will be a great one for the story.

You can catch Finn in Star Wars: The Last Jedi on December 15, 2017.
