John Boyega Loved Colin Trevorrow's Idea of Finn Leading a Stormtrooper Rebellion in STAR WARS: EPISODE IX

The story arc for John Boyega’s Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy was a missed opportunity. His journey really fizzled out there at the end and not only were the fans disappointed and confused by how the character was handled, the actor was as well, and he never really shied away from sharing how he really felt about the situation.

/Film recently shared a post about where Boyega wanted to see Finn’s story arc go and they site a Vanity Fair interview from last year in which Boyega said: "To a certain extent, there should have been a Stormtrooper rebellion." However, the post doesn’t tell you where that idea is from, so I wanted to dive into that aspect.

The whole idea for a Stormtrooper rebellion came from director Collin Trevorrow’s plans for Star Wars: Episode IX. This isn’t something that Boyego just came up with during that interview, this was something that was actually being planned! This was something that was going to happen had Trevorrow been able to make his Star Wars movie. It was explained:

Finn was once going to lead a rebellion on Coruscant, giving him a vastly more satisfying story arc as a result. Here, we get to see him take the fight to the First Order, ending them once and for all with the help of those living in the city.

Boyega actually saw concept art of this and previously talked about it, expressing how much he loved the idea. You can see that concept art above. Boyega said:

“I do actually. I think Colin Trevorrow was going to tell that story. The concept art in the Star Wars book has the image of Finn with the blue flag and the AT-ATs and they have them lined up in tribal marks and the Stormtroopers take off their helmets. That would’ve been sick. That would’ve been dope, man, hands down.”

That would’ve been so cool! Again, this was such a huge missed opportunity to do something really cool! Trevorrow’s movie would have been titled Star Wars: Duel of the Fates. Details have been shared for that story and some concept art was shared giving us a visualization of Trevorrow’s vision. The script for his film is online and can be read anytime anyone wants.

Boyega talked previously about his excitement over the initial plans for Duel of the Fates, mentioned the Stormtrooper rebellion again, and explains that he’ll never read the script because it will leave him heartbroken. He said:

"I can’t read that one, because I’ll be heartbroken. I had a sitdown with Colin. That was one of the best Star Wars meetings I had ever had. It felt like two nerds that were like, ‘Yes, that’s what we want to see!’ I saw the art, the Stormtrooper rebellion. That stuff was cold."

It’s a shame that this version of the movie didn’t get made. It would’ve been so much better than what Abrams delivered.
