John C. Reilly Is Buffalo Bill in Trailer for the Italian Western Film HEADS OR TAILS

There’s something cool about seeing the spaghetti Western genre get a fresh spin, and the newly released trailer for Heads or Tails is proof that the style still has plenty of fire left in it.

With John C. Reilly stepping into the boots of Buffalo Bill and a story that blends romance, violence, and myth-making, this one looks like it’s aiming to carve out its own place in the genre.

The film comes from Italian directors Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis, the duo behind The Tale of King Crab, and it first premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

Set at the turn of the 20th century, Heads or Tails drops us into a version of Italy that’s being swept up in the legend of the American West. Buffalo Bill’s traveling show rolls into town, selling spectacle and frontier fantasy, but things spiral fast when a rodeo showdown between American cowboys and Italian riders turns deadly.

From there, the story locks onto Rosa, played by Nadia Tereszkiewicz, who escapes a brutal marriage and runs off with Santino, a rebellious rider portrayed by Alessandro Borghi.

What follows is a chase across the Italian wilderness, with bounty hunters, power struggles, and Buffalo Bill himself caught up in the pursuit.

It’s a story that feels classic on the surface, but there’s a twist in how it frames myth versus reality, especially as Rosa’s search for freedom runs headfirst into a world where justice is bought and sold.

Reilly’s involvement seems to have shaped the film in interesting ways. The directors shared: "When John came on board, he was exactly what we were looking for, not only tonally.

“He also had some ideas and brought many insights into the character, including many ironic aspects, and what he could look like and what he could do."

That added layer of irony could be exactly what gives this Western its unique flavor, especially with Buffalo Bill portrayed less like a legend and more like a man tangled in his own narrative.

Early reactions suggest the movie leans into both chaos and commentary. One review describes it as: "This enjoyably rambunctious spaghetti Western tips its outlaw lovers into a nascent Italian class war."

Heads or Tails looks like it could be a pretty cool and fun addition to the Western revival we’ve been seeing lately. If you’re into gritty period pieces with a bit of attitude, this one might be worth keeping on your radar.

The movie will get a limited theatrical and VOD release starting April 10th, 2026.
