John Carpenter and Blumhouse Are Teaming Up For a Reboot of THE THING

Director John Carpenter is partnering up with Blumhouse Productions and producer Jason Blum to develop a reboot of Carpenter’s classic 1982 sci-fi horror classic The Thing. I hate this news. Even with Carpenter involved, this just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Seriously, why in the hell couldn’t Carpenter and Blumhouse team up to develop an original project!? Why did it have to be a reboot of an all-time classic that should never be remade?! This makes me sad.

Carpenter announced the news this past weekend on a panel for the Fantasia International Film Festival. During the Q&A Carpenter was asked if he had talked with Blum about directing any projects and he said:

“I have? I don’t know about that. But we’ve talked about — I think he’s going to be working on ‘The Thing,’ rebooting ‘The Thing.’ I’m involved with that, maybe. Down the road.”

The project is still in the early stages, and no other details have been revealed. Don’t forget, there was a prequel film that was released in 2011, which starred Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton. I honestly don’t really remember anything from that movie. I had to watch the trailer to be reminded.

It’d be fine if this new project turned out to be another prequel that told a different story or even a sequel, but I just can’t get behind a reboot of the original film, which was based on 1938 novella “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell Jr. I love that film.

The story for The Thing centers around an Antarctic research team who find themselves fighting for their lives as they are being terrorized by a parasitic alien life form that can imitate other people.

What are your thoughts on Carpenter looking to reboot The Thing with Blumhouse?
