John Carpenter Says HALLOWEEN KILLS Stunned Him at How Incredible It Is
John Carpenter is a big fan of director David Gordon Green’s upcoming Halloween Kills movie. During a recent panel at the Fantasia International Film Festival, Carpenter said that the upcoming sequel is “a slasher movie times one hundred,” teased a massive kill count, and also said that it’s “brutal.”
On top of that, he hailed it as “the quintessential slasher film.” Carpenter loves this movie, and he’s super excited about fans being able to see it. Here’s what he said about the movie:
“It’s the quintessential slasher film. It is so intense…oh my god…it even stuns me how incredible it is. David just did a great job. Can’t wait to have you see it.”
Carpenter also said that the music he was creating for Halloween Kills is complete. You can watch the full hour-long interview below, with his comments on Halloween Kills starting at the 26:43 mark.
When previously talking about the movie, David Gordon Green talked about the story and how it centers around “a community that is united by outrage, and divided in how to deal with evil.” He explained:
“If the first film was somewhat retelling the origin of Myers and getting us up to speed with where Laurie had been all those years, then part two is about the outrage of Haddonfield. Mob Rules was our working title for the film. It’s about a community that is united by outrage, and divided in how to deal with evil.”
The filmmaker went on to talk about the final part of his trilogy, Halloween Ends, saying:
“It’s a very different movie than Kills, and both Halloweens. The script feels very fun. For me, it was essential to say, ‘Here’s a conclusive episode to my trilogy.’ I’m trying to bring closure to my ‘Laurie Strode versus Michael Myers’ storytelling.”
The 2018 film served as a direct sequel to John Carpenter’s original 1978 horror classic, and Danny McBride previously explained what the middle chapter means for the new trilogy:
"It takes place the same night, picking up where the last movie ended. Events in the film bring together a lot of characters who were in the 1978 film who we didn’t see last time. They gather to try, once and for all, to take down Michael, to stop this madman."
The last movie ended with Laurie Stroud, her daughter Karen, and granddaughter Allyson making their escape after they managed to trap and "kill" Michael Myers in a burning basement. We saw the aftermath of that in the teaser that was released as fire trucks were rushing to the fire to put it out. Laurie is seen yelling at the top of her lungs to “let it burn!”
When talking about Laurie’s continuing story arc, Green added:
"This first one was more about Laurie’s life of isolation after Michael and her attempts at revenge. It was personal. This is more about the unravelling of a community into chaos. It’s about how fear spreads virally.”
Jamie Lee Curtis is joined by Judy Greer and Andi Matichak, who reprise their roles as Laurie’s daughter and granddaughter in the sequels. Michael Myers actors Nick Castle and James Jude Courtney will also come back to their shared role. The film also includes Kyle Richards returning as Lindsey Wallace; Anthony Michael as Tommy Doyle, and Nancy Stephens who will reprise her role as Nurse Marion.
Halloween Kills will be released on October 15th, 2021 and Halloween Ends is coming on October 14th, 2022.
