John Carpenter Says There Have Been Discussions About Making a Sequel To THE THING
John Carpenter‘s The Thing is a sci-fi horror movie masterpiece. It’s such an incredibly well-made film and it most certainly brings the terror. There are aspects of this film that still make me cringe today, and I love the movie for that!
Well, Carpenter isn’t quite done with the franchise yet and he’s interested in making a sequel. In fact, he’s already been having discussions about making it. In a recent interview with Fandom, Carpenter said: "Maybe The Thing. Maybe Prince of Darkness. I can see a little bit more of that. But we’ll see. You never know in this business. You really don’t."
He then went on to expand on a sequel to The Thing, saying, "I just think there’s another bit of a story to tell there, which I’m not going to tell you about. But there have been some discussions about The Thing and what we could do because, as far as we know, both those two main characters – Childs [Keith David] and MacReady [Kurt Russell] – are still alive. They were alive at the end of The Thing, so maybe they’re still alive."
The original 1982 movie follows a group of American researchers in Antarctica who encounter a parasitic alien that can imitate other life forms. The team becomes panicked with paranoia as they realize that any one of them could be the Thing. The way that story plays out if brilliant and terrifying. There was also a remake released in 2011, but it wasn’t as good as the original.
When asked if Russell would return for a sequel, Carpenter said he didn't know. But, it would be pretty damn cool if Russell and David showed up to reprise their roles if this sequel moved forward.
I’d actually be curious to see Carpenter make a sequel to The Thing. I’d like to see what kind of story he’s got brewing. Hopefully, one day we’ll find out. Would you want to see Carpenter make a sequel to The Thing?
