John Krasinski Explains That A QUIET PLACE 2 is Not a Sequel and Teases More Films

It seems that John Krasinski has figured out his plan for expanding the A Quiet Place film franchise. Krasinski is currently writing the script for the next film and in a recent interview with Business Insider, he explains that he’s not approaching it as a sequel.

He says that it “doesn’t feel like a sequel” and and that it’s more like a ”second book in a series of books”. Here’s how the actor puts it:

“I don’t even see it as a sequel. Emily [Blunt] actually blew my mind by categorizing it the correct way after I pitched it to her. She said, ‘This isn’t a sequel at all — this is the second book in a series of books. It’s a widening of a world.’ And I thought that’s the best way to look at it. It doesn’t feel like a sequel — it’s a continuation of living in that world.”

I actually think that’s a great way to handle a franchise like this. Each of the stories that the films will tell are set in the same world and will expand on it instead of just focus on the same characters from the first movie.

When previously talking about his idea for the next film and what it would explore, he says:

"The thing that I loved in the movie. Where my mind kept wandering as we were making it, was the question of who was on the other end of those fires, when the father lights the fire and in the distance, those other fires light up. How did those people survive? How did that old man survive?

"In the extreme, these characters are going through, there’s no room to think about that. They’re there, there’s an old man who’s about to scream, they just have to deal with that. I think it would be interesting to see what’s going on elsewhere at this same time."

He also talked about his excitement for the next film and how he has to abide by the same rules as the first movie:

“I can’t wait to get in there and keep writing and see what this movie wants to allow itself to be. And that will happen in the script process and the shooting and the editing. But I think what’s cool about the second part of this movie is the same set of rules have to apply. I can’t just introduce a world where you can make a ton of sound, and if I did, there would have to be a reason for it. So it’s figuring out if there are smart and clever ways to do it.”

I initially wasn’t thrilled to hear that there would be a sequel, but I’m starting to warm up to the idea. I like where Krasinski’s head is at, and with the way he’s handling the franchise, he could end up delivering another great film.
