John Landis Says He's "Bored Sh**less" With Marvel Movies

Legendary director John Landis (Animal House, An American Werewolf in London) is not a fan of the superhero films that Marvel Studios is developing. These films are extremely popular right now and they are both hitting with audiences and critics, but in a recent interview with Irish Times, the director revealed that he's "bored shitless" with them. He says:

“I’m just… truthfully, I’m bored shitless with the Marvel Universe now. All the superhero movies tend to be interchangeable, you always have these mass destruction of cities and huge computer-generated extravaganzas to the point where you could take a reel from any of the Marvel superhero movies and put it any of the others and nobody would notice.”

I'm sure the fans would notice, but I do understand what he's saying. For the most part, most Marvel movies have the same tone and style. There are a few exceptions, though, like the Guardians of the Galaxy films. I'm certainly not bored with any of them, though, because I love the stories they tell. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference. He goes on to say:

“They’re very well-made. It’s just they’re the same thing over and over again. But, I don’t know, people are showing up.”

Marvel definitely does have a formulaic way of doing things, but as you all know, it works for the universe that they've set up. The way Marvel does things could very well change in the future after Avengers 4, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Landis goes on to admit that he liked Wonder Woman and says:

“One of the reasons ‘Wonder Woman‘ has been received so well by the critics is that it doesn’t destroy cities! [laughs] Even the superhero stuff is on a very human scale, it’s the gods! We’re not seeing skyscrapers tumbling!”

Of course, he's joking around here. We all know the movie isn't getting great reviews because it doesn't destroy cities... right?

Landis also talks a bit about Universal Pictures' Dark Universe and when talking about The Mummy, he says that it's not a new concept and that "it isn’t respectful of the monsters”, which I 100% agree with. At least Marvel is respectful of their legendary characters.

What do you think about what Landis had to say here?
