John Lithgow is back as the Trinity Killer in Showtime’s Dexter revival and in a recent interview, he opened up about his return and shared some insight on his character and the highly anticipated series.

Lithgow was only called onto the set to shoot for one afternoon, so he’s obviously not going to have a big role in the series. Regardless, he was excited to be a part of it and learn more about the story that it’s going to tell. When talking about that story, Lithgow shared:

“I learned that it’s completely different from [the original series]. Kind of like Perry Mason, it’s a reimagination. They don’t take it into a different era, but it’s in a different part of the world, a different part of the country, and a whole new cast of characters.”

At the same time, he went on to tease, “there are all sorts of wonderful surprises and callbacks from the first few seasons.” One of those callbacks will include the return of Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan.

Lithgow went on to reveal that he first found out about the Dexter revival five months before they started shooting when showrunner Clyde Phillips called him, “He said, ‘Can you come just to spend one day in The Berkshires?’ I said, ‘Of course I can,’ and that’s exactly what it was.”

As for how Lithgow will return, the actor shared, “As all Dexter fans know, we saw the end of the Trinity Killer, so that by definition means it’s a flashback. It was just wonderful to rejoin that gang—including Michael and Jennifer Carpenter and Clyde Phillips.”

I thought he would show up in Dexter’s head, so it’s interesting to learn that it will be a flashback sequence. It’ll be interesting to see how that will tie into the story.

The new season of Dexter will consist of 10 episodes, and the story is set 10 years after Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura. Dexter is now living under an assumed name in Upstate New York — far from his original home in Miami.

The series stars Clancy Brown, Julia Jones, Alano Miller, Johnny Sequoyah, David Magidoff, Jack Alcott, Jamie Chung, and Oscar Wahlberg. John Lithgow is also coming back to reprise his role as the Trinity Killer.

Brown will be playing a character named Kurt Caldwell, the primary villain of the show. The character is described as the “unofficial mayor of the small town of Iron Lake. He’s realized the American dream by going from driving big rigs, just like his father did, to now owning several trucks and the local truck stop. Powerful, generous, loved by everyone – he’s a true man of the people. If he’s got your back, consider yourself blessed. But should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for, God help you.”

Jones will play Angela Bishop, the first Native American Chief of Police in her town in upstate New York. Sequoyah portrays Audrey, Bishop’s brash and opinionated teenage daughter. Miller will play Logan, a sergeant for the Iron Lake Police Department and the assistant wrestling coach for the local high school. Alcott is Randall, with whom Dexter (Hall) has a meaningful encounter.

Chung will play a character named Molly, who is described as "a famous true-crime podcaster from Los Angeles." Then there’s Wahlberg, who will play Zach, "captain of the Iron Lake High School wrestling team" and the "gateway to the in-crowd, which includes the daughter of the chief of police."

It was previously revealed that Kurt’s son Matthew “has created many ‘messes’ over the years, messes that are cleaned up by Kurt with the wealth he has amassed throughout his lifetime.”
