John Williams Isn't Retiring Anytime Soon - "I've Got 10 More Years to Go"
Legendary film composer John Williams is 90 years old, but he has no plans to retire anytime soon. In fact, in a recent interview, he shared that he still has “10 more years to go.”
During the American Cinematheque celebration at the Writers Guild of America Theater in Beverly Hills, the composer said: "I'll stick around for a while. I can't retire from music. A day without music is a mistake."
The celebration focused on the Williams and director Steven Spielberg’s 50-year collaboration. Their relationship started way back in 1974 with the film The Sugarland Express, and they’ve been working together ever since.
They most recently collaborated on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which Spielberg is producing. Prior to that Williams had been thinking about his possible retirement, but when Spielberg approached him about Indiana Jones 5, Williams said: "Steven is a lot of things. He's a director, he's a producer, he's a studio head, he's a writer, he's a philanthropist, he's an educator. One thing he isn't is a man you can say 'no' to.”
He then added: “So I've got 10 more years to go. I'll stick around for a while! Also, you can't 'retire' from music. It's like breathing. It's your life. It's my life. A day without music is a mistake."
Spielberg appeared to be shocked by what Williams said, and replied, "I'd better get to work to find out what the hell I'm doing next!"
Williams just loves what he does, and it’s hard to step away from something that you love doing so much. While he has earned retirement, I love that he’s going to stick with it and continue to create more music.
