John Woo is Remaking His 1989 Action Film THE KILLER and Lupita Nyong'o Will Play The Assassin

John Woo and Universal Pictures are teaming up to develop a remake of his classic 1989 action crime thriller The Killer. According to Deadline, the movie is being developed for Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther) as a starring vehicle and she is currently in negotiations to take on the role of the assassin. That role was originally played by Chow Yun-fat. The studio has put the project on the fast track and Woo is set to direct it.

The story follows an assassin who puts her own life on the line to save a woman whom she accidentally blinded in her last hit. Eran Creevy (Collide) wrote a script that is based on an original draft by Cloverfield Lane‘s Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken, and Brian Helgeland. The report goes on to say:

The film is a touchstone picture, one widely emulated for its balletic, stylized violent scenes. The redo will blend espionage with extraordinary stunts to capture the feel of the original.

I've always enjoyed the action films of John Woo and how crazy and over-the-top they have been. It will be a lot of fun to see Nyong’o take on a role like this. This will be very different from anything she's ever done before and there's no doubt that she's going to kick ass in it!
