While it has been proven time and time again that video games make for mediocre to terrible movies, it's recently been discovered that video game adaptations made for TV and streaming might not be so bad. The new Castlevania series on Netflix has shown many that video games can indeed make interesting storylines if handled right. And now Infinitum Nihil, Johnny Depp's production company, is in talks to turn a successful MMO game called The Secret World into a television series.
I have not actually played the game but in looking up information on it, it sounds pretty awesome. It's based on the universe of the Secret World IP. It involves all sorts of legends and myths and conspiracy theories to create an interesting setting for a team of secret agents to try and uncover.
It will center on a team of undercover agents and the shadowy war between secret societies: the Illuminati, Dragon and the Templar. Central to the plot is their battle against the supernatural in an adventure that spans across our world, and incorporates the realms of ancient myths and legends, as well as today’s conspiracy theories and headline news.
When talking about the series, showrunner Pam Veasey said, “The Secret World is the ideal gaming experience to translate into a live-action episodic adventure." Producer Gudrun Giddings added:
"It’s one of the most character driven and well-developed games I know of and naturally lends itself to fantastical storylines with intriguing characters, a thrilling and binge-worthy international TV show.”
With so many television series being made based on superheroes nowadays, maybe it could be interesting to have a series of regular people taking on the unknown. It reminds me of shows like Buffy and Angel. I miss those shows. This could be a big step in whatever is truly next for entertainment. I am excited to see who they get to star in this show.
