JOKER: FOLIE Á DEUX Director Says the Ending Will Be "Very Unsettling" for Audiences
Joker: Folie à Deux writer and director Todd Phillips recently held a Q&A session before a screening of the film, and during that discussion, he talked about the film’s ending and how he thinks audiences will react to it.
Phillips explained: "For the people that have seen this movie in general ... at the end, they sit and they don't move for about three to five minutes.”
He also said that he’s received messages from early viewers as well, sharing: "Then they text me, the ones that know me, or email me and go, 'I need a minute to process the movie.’”
He went on to say that the ending of the film will leave audiences feeling very unsettled: "I think it's going to leave you with a very unsettling ... I think it's unsettling,"
He also noted that the film also "clarifies a lot of things that you might have had questions about in the first movie ... I hope it all gets answered."
Phillips discussed the franchise's shaky relationship with reality, saying, "He had a lot of fantasies in the first movie. This movie really finds Arthur, answers everything as far as, well, that movie really happened. All that stuff really happened."
Phillips goes on to specifically note the murder of Robert De Niro's Murray Franklin and "those kids on the subway" as two events from the end of the first movie that are definitely real. But, he doesn't mention the murders of Randall or Penny.
While he says the sequel will clarify the first film's more surreal elements, he also joked that audiences still might have some questions. He concluded, saying: "Again, if you don't understand it, email me. I think it'll all come together."
The movie has been met with mixed reviews by those who have seen it, and while I’m curious about this movie, I’m not really that excited about it.
In the film, Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) is institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him.
Arthur forms a strong relationship with Quinn (Lady Gaga) and together they embark on a journey filled with violence and music, because this movie is a musical.
The movie also stars Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Brendan Gleeson who will be playing undisclosed characters.
Joker: Folie á Deux is scheduled for release on October 4, 2024.
