Jon Favreau Addresses THE MANDALORIAN Season 4 After THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU Movie Shift
Fans hoping for answers about The Mandalorian Season 4 finally got a small update from Jon Favreau, though it came with a pretty interesting twist.
While attending the red-carpet premiere of The Mandalorian & Grogu at the TCL Chinese Theatre, Favreau was asked point-blank if another season of the hit Star Wars series could still happen after the upcoming movie.
His response didn’t exactly shut the door, but it also made it clear that the future of the franchise may now be sitting more in Dave Filoni’s hands.
When speaking with Variety, Favreau said: “It’s a good question. You should talk to Dave Filoni over there because he’s running the show now.”
The road leading to The Mandalorian & Grogu becoming a feature film instead of The Mandalorian Season 4 has been anything but straightforward.
Lucasfilm has been navigating major changes internally, especially following the exits of Disney CEO Bob Iger and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy from their positions. During that stretch, the studio reportedly began reevaluating its priorities and reshaping its Star Wars strategy.
Then came the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, which completely stalled television production across Hollywood. Rather than sitting idle, Favreau and the creative team pivoted and decided to push Din Djarin and Grogu onto the big screen instead.
What makes the situation especially interesting is that Season 4 apparently wasn’t some disconnected side adventure. Favreau previously said that the shelved season had major ties to the larger Star Wars storyline unfolding on Disney+.
The scripts reportedly leaned heavily into Grand Admiral Thrawn and were meant to connect directly into Season 2 of Ahsoka.
So now fans are left wondering what happens next. Does Filoni eventually revive those original Season 4 ideas? Does the Thrawn storyline get folded into future movies instead? Or does the success of The Mandalorian & Grogu completely reshape where these characters go from here?
One important detail here is that Favreau has already said in previous interviews that The Mandalorian Season 4 was still in development regardless of how the movie performs. So even though the series temporarily evolved into a theatrical project, the possibility of returning to Disney+ apparently hasn’t disappeared.
At this point, Lucasfilm seems to be keeping its options open while Filoni continues building the interconnected corner of the Star Wars universe that includes Ahsoka, Thrawn, and Din Djarin’s ongoing story.
For now, fans can look forward to seeing Din and Grogu back in action when The Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters on May 22.
