Jon Favreau and Mark Ruffalo Respond To Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola Marvel Criticisms

Legendary filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola have both made comments criticizing the films that Marvel has made. While neither of them have clearly watched any of the Marvel movies, it didn’t stop them from saying that they are “not cinema” and are “despicable”.

These comments definitely have gotten Marvel fans riled up and they are defending these films because, after all, they are by definition considered cinema. Now Marvel director Jon Favreau and actor Mark Ruffalo have shared their thoughts on the criticism.

Ruffalo had a perfect response tweeting, "Back in the day, people thought rock 'n' roll and hip-hop weren't music and despicable too.”

Well, you can’t argue with that because he’s right. Just because something is new, fresh, different, and popular, doesn’t mean it’s not art. There are all kinds of different art forms just like there are all different kinds of cinema. Marvel is just the big thing right now so of course, there are those that are going to call it out.

As for Favreau, his response was a bit more diplomatic saying, "These two guys are my heroes, and they have earned the right to express their opinions. I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing if they didn’t carve the way. They served as a source of inspiration, you can go all the way back to Swingers. They can express whatever opinion they like.”

Yeah, everyone does have the right to have an opinion. I think my issue is that they are making these opinions without having watched the movies. It’s hard to form a real opinion that matters if you aren’t really familiarizing yourself with the thing you’re making an opinion on. That’d be like me writing a review for a film that I never bothered to see. It wouldn’t be a real review.

What do you all think about Ruffalo and Favreau’s response to Scorsese and Coppola?
