Jon Favreau Didn't Originally Plan for Luke Skywalker to Appear in THE MANDALORIAN

The second season of The Mandalorian ended with the awesome showdown between Mando’s group of outlaws and the dark troopers seeking to destroy them aboard the captured Moff Gideon’s ship. When it seemed all hope was lost, the greatest Jedi of all, Luke Skywalker showed up to save them and invite Grogu to train in the ways of the Jedi.

It was an amazing scene, but some may be surprised to hear that series creator Jon Favreau didn’t originally have this season ending planned with Skywalker’s return. In a recent interview with Writer’s Guild of America West, he was asked if he had the character’s appearance planned since the beginning. He said:

No. The story unfolded as I wrote it. The Mandalorian inherits a great deal from existing Star Wars stories, and when I write, that context is always a consideration. It became clear that, within the established continuity, certain things were likely to transpire.

He was then asked if it made him nervous that he was writing a story in the midst of an already established saga, and if he felt that boxed him in. He responded:

We have a tremendous amount of freedom afforded to us because of the gap in time between the films. Dave Filoni and I are in constant discussion regarding how each story choice is impacted by, and would impact, existing Star Wars material.

I love hearing about their process in making this series. I think it is so well-done, and I am excited to see how the rest of the story plays out. I have full faith that they will make a great series, as following their gut has led us to a powerful and emotional ending of Season 2, with a whole lot more story yet to be told.
