Jon Favreau Explains Why There Are No Toys for "The Child" in THE MANDALORIAN
Hopefully, soon we will have a name for the Yoda-like baby in The Mandalorian. I don’t want to call him baby Yoda like everyone else because it’s not Yoda. Until his name is revealed, I’ll just refer to him as “The Child”.
Anyway, in case you’ve been wondering why you haven’t seen any toys for “The Child” yet, series creator Jon Favreau explains that the reason is he didn’t want the big reveal to be spoiled. Lots of things get spoiled by toys for big event films these days! While talking to Collider, Favreau said:
“I have to thank Disney and Lucasfilm, because the way the cat usually gets out of the bag with that stuff is merchandising and toy catalogs and things like that. So they really back us up. We really wanted to have it be that you had to watch it yourself, so that every time you watch the show, there are new twists and secrets that come out. That requires a lot of restraint from the people who are footing the bill, saying they’re gonna hold back on certain things so that the public doesn’t know ahead of time. Part of that was holding back on some of the merchandise and holding back on some of the characters.”
This is one aspect of the series that I’m so happy wasn’t spoiled for me. It was such a cool and pleasant surprise, and it’s a rare thing to get that these days with big franchises like Star Wars. It’s pretty incredible that this big reveal didn’t leak out. You’ve got to give credit to the cast and crew for keeping their mouths shut.
It’s also cool of Disney and Lucasfilm to hold off on the merchandise. There’s a ton of money to be made with merch, so that’s seriously a real sacrifice on their part. Don’t worry, though, I’m sure they will cash in on it soon and fans can buy their adorable toys of “The Child” soon enough.
