Jon Favreau Has Big Plans for Grogu’s Future in STAR WARS: “He’s on a Path to Be Both a Jedi and a Mandalorian”
The Mandalorian and Grogu is bringing Din Djarin and everyone’s favorite little Force-powered troublemaker to theaters after years of ruling Disney+. After three seasons of The Mandalorian and a key appearance in The Book of Boba Fett, the father-son duo are finally getting the cinematic treatment, and this next chapter is only the beginning for Grogu.
While speaking about the upcoming film, director Jon Favreau teased that he’s already thinking far beyond this next adventure, especially when it comes to where Grogu’s story is headed in the larger Star Wars universe.
"Creatively, I have a lot of plans, and I have a lot of thoughts about these characters, especially for Grogu. Grogu is a character that is – his species lives for centuries.
“He's on a path to be both a Jedi and a Mandalorian. He's making certain choices and decisions, and he has a great teacher now. And so, as he develops and grows, there's opportunities for stories that would emanate from that."
That’s a pretty awesome direction for the character because Grogu already exists in a fascinating space within Star Wars lore. He’s not fully tied to the Jedi way, but he also isn’t walking away from the Force.
Instead, he’s carving out something completely his own while learning from Din Djarin and carrying pieces of Jedi training with him.
Favreau also talked about how unusual Grogu’s journey has been compared to most Jedi we’ve seen in the franchise.
"He's not on the typical Jedi path of a youngling, but he has trained with some of the best Jedi teachers that there are. We know for sure he's studied with Luke Skywalker.
“There's implications that he may have crossed paths with Yoda, because he does recognize the name, is what we imply. And he also was there at the Jedi Temple before Order 66.”
Between surviving the fall of the Jedi Order and training with Luke Skywalker, there’s a lot packed into the little guy’s past that Lucasfilm still hasn’t fully explored.
Favreau went on to explain how Grogu continues to grow stronger with the Force even outside traditional Jedi teachings.
"So, it's a big part in talking to Dave Filoni, and by extension, to what he learned from George [Lucas], which is that the Force is about training. It's about refining, just like an athletic ability or any skill.
“And we do see that, although Grogu is not serving under somebody who is teaching him, he still clearly is meditating and going through some version of the Jedi discipline.
“So, I think that his Force use has definitely leveled up a bit. Luke Skywalker didn't study under Obi-Wan for very long, but still refined his skills. So, I think that that's part of the path that's available to Grogu, as per what we've already learned from the previous Star Wars films."
That explanation fits with what we’ve seen throughout Star Wars. Luke’s training was unconventional. Rey’s training was unconventional. Grogu continuing to evolve outside the rigid structure of the old Jedi Order feels very in line with where the franchise has been heading for years.
And honestly, the idea of Grogu eventually becoming a full-on Jedi Mandalorian hybrid sounds incredibly cool.
Lucasfilm still hasn’t confirmed what comes after The Mandalorian and Grogu, but Favreau clearly sees a long future ahead for the character. Considering Grogu’s species can live for centuries, there’s plenty of room for Star Wars to keep exploring his story for a very long time.
The Mandalorian and Grogu lands in theaters on May 22.
