Jon Favreau Says Third Season of THE MANDALORIAN Shouldn't Be Impacted by Pandemic

Jon Favreau, director and creator of the hit Star Wars series The Mandalorian, sat down with THR and co-executive producer of the series Dave Filoni to answer a few questions about the series. The first season of the show was released last November, when the Disney+ streamer was launched. Fans went crazy over the show, which many felt really got back to the core of Star Wars storytelling. Before the season was even released, Favreau revealed that he had already written a second season, and the show was soon greenlit, and they got to work.

Luckily they were in the perfect position when the pandemic shut everything down in Hollywood and had what they needed to get to work on post-production remotely, which is why we’re still on track to get that second season this October. In the interview with THR, Favreau was asked if he thinks the making of the potential third season will be impacted by the pandemic. He responded:

The fact that the set is much more contained is a benefit, because you can limit the number of people. A lot of the people controlling it are doing it remotely from what we call the Brain Bar, which is a bank of gaming computers, essentially. The amount of people near the camera could be much smaller than [usual]. We also shoot a lot outside, which is helpful, too. We build to a moment in filming more like an animated production, where we have a lot of storyboards, a lot of discussions and scouting in virtual reality. We use cinematic tools in VR much the same way we did for The Lion King and The Jungle Book. A lot of times the actors you are seeing on the screen aren't actually there on set.

That is great to hear! Favreau has already confirmed that he and Filoni are developing that third season, and we all know it is going to get reordered. So it’s good news that there is a plan in place, and the cast and crew are prepared for a safe shoot.

Season 2 will continue the journey of The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal), a bounty hunter who becomes the guardian of a mysterious creature known only as The Child, as they’re hunted by Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito). They will be joined by new cast members that include Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett and maybe Captain Rex, Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka, Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan, Timothy Olyphant as Cobb Vanth, and Michael Biehn in a yet to be revealed role.
