Jon Favreau Shares The Advice George Lucas Gave with Him While Making THE MANDALORIAN

While Jon Favreau and his team were shooting Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian, Star Wars creator George Lucas visited the set to check it out. As you might imagine, the two talents had a lot to talk about and during one of their conversations, Lucas offered Favreau some advice on telling stories.

Favreau shared what Lucas told him in an interview with GQ Middle East:

“We had a long talk with each other. One thing he said to me was, ‘Remember, Jon, the real audience for all stories and all myths is the kids that are coming of age,’ because he’s really a Joseph Campbell adherent.”

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Joseph Campbell, he is the author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces, which is his opinion on the hero’s journey, which is a guide to follow when telling a hero’s story and how the hero needs to change over the course of his journey. Lucasfilm has always kept this in mind when making his films. You can easily see it and see that they are geared toward a younger audience. Favreau shared his own thoughts on this, saying:

“We enjoy the stories as adults, but really, storytelling is about imparting the wisdom of the previous generations on to the children who are becoming adults, and giving them a context for how to behave and how to learn the lessons of the past without making the mistakes on their own. That’s the hope, that you can teach them how to avoid all the hardship but garner all the wisdom.”

This is great advice and something for storytellers to keep in mind. But, regardless of the advice, The Mandalorian looks like it’s taking a more mature approach with the Star Wars universe, which I think fans are going to be fine with, but it’s not going to be too mature for the kids! Of course they are going to be a able to watch it and there is going to be a hero’s journey for them to follow.

The series stars Pedro Pascal (Narcos) as “a lone Mandalorian gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy.” It also includes Gina Carano (Deadpool), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Carl Weathers (Predator), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), and Nick Nolte (Affliction).

The plot of the show is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order, and here’s the synopsis:

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The first season of The Mandalorian is being directed by Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) directing the first episode and serving as executive producer alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson. Additional directors include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).

The Mandalorian will debut on Disney+ on November 12th, 2019.
