Jon Favreau Teases Conversations About a Future Flash-Forward for Grogu in THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU
The Mandalorian and Grogu is in theaters, bringing Din Djarin and Grogu back together for another galaxy-spanning adventure. This time around, the duo are working as bounty hunters for the New Republic as they track down Rotta the Hutt, and while the movie keeps its story planted firmly in the present, the creative team kicked around an idea that could’ve given fans a peek at Grogu’s distant future.
During a special fan theory breakdown with Entertainment Weekly, director Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni reacted to a theory from a user named 4forlore, who guessed that the film’s post-credits scene might reveal an older version of Grogu as a fully grown member of Yoda’s species.
That scene never made it into the movie, but Favreau’s reaction definitely raised some eyebrows. He said: "There are things that 4thelore has brought up that we have actually…"
Before he could finish the thought, Filoni jumped in with: “He's not that far."
That little exchange immediately made the theory feel a lot more interesting. The filmmakers stopped short of confirming anything specific, but the idea clearly isn’t coming out of nowhere.
Then Pedro Pascal chimed in with: “If Grogu ever gets that old I'll be long dead," which led Favreau to clarify exactly what the fan theory meant: "Saying a flash forward, that you would get a glimpse of the future."
That opens up a lot of possibilities for where Star Wars could eventually take Grogu. Since his species ages incredibly slowly, there’s a massive timeline of storytelling potential sitting there waiting to be explored as a Jedi Mandalorian.
Favreau has clearly been thinking about that too. In a previous interview, the filmmaker explained: "Creatively, I have a lot of plans, and I have a lot of thoughts about these characters, especially for Grogu.
“Grogu is a character that is – his species lives for centuries. He's on a path to be both a Jedi and a Mandalorian. He's making certain choices and decisions, and he has a great teacher now. And so, as he develops and grows, there's opportunities for stories that would emanate from that."
That’s a pretty exciting tease because Grogu’s journey has always felt bigger than the current timeline of The Mandalorian. He’s one of the few characters in the franchise who could realistically bridge multiple eras of Star Wars storytelling. Lucasfilm could jump decades or even centuries ahead and Grogu would still be around.
At the moment, though, there’s no official word on where Din Djarin and Grogu will show up next after The Mandalorian and Grogu. The Mandalorian Season 4 still hasn’t been announced, and there’s no confirmation about another film or Disney+ project featuring the characters.
Still, after these latest comments from Favreau and Filoni, it definitely feels like the idea of seeing an older Grogu somewhere down the line hasn’t been ruled out at all. The thought of eventually meeting a wise, battle-tested Jedi Mandalorian version of Grogu in his prime is pretty awesome.
