Jon M. Chu Says Audiences Won't See Dorothy's Face in WICKED: FOR GOOD - "This is Still Elphaba and Glinda's Journey"

Wicked director Jon M. Chu has cast his Broadway-based films beautifully, and some have speculated since the first film about who would play Dorothy in the sequel. Chu explained in a recent interview with People that Dorothy Gale will feature more heavily in For Good than in the stage show, however, the director confirmed that audiences will not see her face.

“I didn’t want to step on who you think Dorothy is in whatever story that you came into this with,” he says. This, after all, “is still Elphaba and Glinda’s journey, and she is a pawn in the middle of all of it.”

This makes sense, as The Wizard of Oz is a perfect movie that everyone knows and loves, and we don’t need to change its lore. Wicked has always been an addition to Oz- the witches’ backstories, and Judy Garland’s Dorothy is still remembered as the one we will always picture in the role.

But it’s cool that she will be a little more featured than in the stage musical. Another addition to the film includes the origin story of Elphaba’s disabled sister Nessarose (Marissa Bode).

Plus Michelle Yeoh’s Madame Morrible will also be involved in fleshing out “an iconic moment we all know from our youth,” teases the director. “We have this amazing moment of the tornado and how it gets conjured, which is not in the show, really.”

Most notable among the changes that Chu, and writers Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox made is the addition of two new songs from Stephen Schwartz: Erivo’s "No Place Like Home" and Grande’s "The Girl in the Bubble.”

I can’t wait to hear the new songs and see the final chapter of this story. Wicked: For Good is set to be released in theaters on November 21. Tickets are available now.
