Jonas Cuaron Will Direct That Futuristic Zorro Movie, Now Titled Z

A futuristic Zorro movie has been slashing around Hollywood for years, and though it's gotten close to production before, it seems like the caped hero is actually going to ride again this time. THR reports that Jonas Cuaron has come on board as the film's new director.

Jonas co-wrote Gravity with his father, director Alfonso Cuaron, and directed a short Gravity spin-off film before making his feature directorial debut with the border thriller Desierto. THR calls the movie, now titled simply Z, a "reworking" of Zorro Reborn, the long-gestating futuristic take on the California nobleman and freedom fighter. But it's unclear if Cuaron will rewrite the script, or if there's been any significant change to the story since he came on board. They do mention that "Z is set in the near future but keeps the idea of a masked and caped stranger taking on tyrants."

Production is supposed to begin this summer at Pinewood's Dominican Republic-based studios. The futuristic angle could either be really cheesy or really cool — it all comes down to the script, because if the story isn't solid, no amount of awesome production design is going to save this movie. What do you think?
