Jonathan Frakes Pitched a STAR TREK Film Taking Q on His "Ultimate Adventure"

The classic Star Trek alien character Q, who possesses immeasurable power over time, space, the laws of physics, and reality itself, being capable of altering it to his whim, is going to be brought back for at least a cameo in the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks.

It turns out that Star Trek: The Next Generation alum Jonathan Frakes actually wanted to bring back the character and play with him in a film project that he pitched at one point years ago.

During a recent panel, Frakes, who directed eight episodes of The Next Generation and two of its movies, Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection, revealed that he wanted to bring actor John de Lancie back as Q for one of those movies that he made.

Frakes said he pitched one of the movies as "the ultimate Q adventure. That was my pitch. Well, from my good fortune of getting involved with the movies. I kept saying, 'When is our finest nemesis going to be in the movies?' I'm still surprised that wasn't so."

It actually is kind of surprising that Q never made it into one of the feature films. He’s such an interesting character! De Lancie, who was also a part of the panel, said he always wanted the opportunity to visit the Q Continuum, which appeared in the Star Trek: Voyager episode, "Death Wish."

"The place that they never got into it, which is too bad. Which was: What is the Continuum? Other than a road in the desert that goes on, and the shingle in the old gas station. I actually—which I'm not going to tell people, even now—I did create a backstory on that, which would have been really interesting. But I think it's actually someplace that would require a great deal of imagination, and I think the audience would go. So I wish that they had gone there."

With Frakes heavily involved with Star Trek: Picard and directing several episodes, there’s an opportunity there for him to bring Q into a new adventure. Given Q's history with Picard, it would make sense to see the character reunite with Picard again. I hope that he gets the opportunity, it would be great to see Q again!
