Jordan Peele is Producing a Documentary Series on Lorena Bobbitt, The Woman Who Cut off Her Husband's... You Know
Amazon Studios is developing a documentary series based on Lorena Bobbitt and they've brought Jordan Peele on board as an executive producer. This seems like a different kind of project for Peele to be attached to, it seems like a subject that he would find comedy in, but this isn't going to be a comedy. They are taking this seriously and giving Lorena the opportunity to tell her story.
The series will be called Lorena and it will "delve into the notorious case of husband and wife John and Lorena Bobbitt. In 1993, Lorena made headlines around the world when she cut off her husband’s penis. She later claimed that she did so after he raped her. The series will examine how the case laid the groundwork for the modern 24-hour news cycle and increasing sensationalistic media coverage. It will also explore the national discussion on domestic and sexual assault in America."
The series will consist of four episodes and when talking about it, Peele had this to say in a statement:
“When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle. With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story and we’re honored to help her tell it.”
Heather Schuster, the head of unscripted for Amazon Originals added:
"Jordan has proven himself as a captivating voice of social critique and we are excited to work with him on this project. ‘Lorena’ reframes Lorena Bobbitt’s story around issues of sexism and domestic abuse and offers Prime members an exclusive new view into how America got her story wrong and maybe continues to get it wrong."
This should be interesting. I remember when this happened and how it was on the news all the time. There's only one thing that a lot of people remember from this story. I was 15-years-old at the time and hearing a story about a woman cutting off her husbands penis was a terrifying thought for any teenage boy. I remember a lot of people laughing at the situation and making jokes about it. This series is aiming to change the way people might remember this story and offer some additional insight.
